Men’s Soccer:
Vikings upset No. 6 L.A. Harbor 2-1 in conference opener
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team came-from-behind to shock No. 6 nationally-ranked Los Angeles Harbor College 2-1 in both teams’ South Coast Conference opener Friday at LBCC.
Despite being outshot 22-11, the Vikings came through when it mattered most to hand the Seahawks their first loss of the season.
Harbor took an early lead in the 16th minute when sophomore Daniel Orzoco nailed a deflected shot past LBCC goal keeper Brendon Welch (St. John Bosco HS).
Long Beach got its first score of the game early in the second half. Freshman Jesus Rivas (Carson) was taken down by a Harbor defender in the box and the Vikings were awarded a penalty kick.
Freshman Willie Navarro promptly converted the PK to tie the game at one in the 48th minute.
LBCC took the lead for good in the 63rd minute. Freshman Hugo Ayala’s (Poly) left cross pass found Rivas in front of the goal. He slipped the shot past Harbor keeper Brandon Merriwether to put LBCC up 2-1.
The win improved Long Beach to 6-3-2 overall and 1-0 in the South Coast Conference. Harbor fell to 7-1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The LBCC men return to action on Tuesday when they travel to El Camino College for a 4 pm SCC game.
