Reuss' two goals leads Vikings to 3-2 win over El Camino
Sophomore midfielder Alex Reuss tallied a pair of first-half goals to lead the Long Beach City College men’s soccer team to a 3-2 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Tuesday.
Long Beach outshot El Camino by a narrow 15-14 margin, but took advantage of its major scoring opportunities.
LBCC got on the board first in the 15th minute on a corner kick goal. Freshman defender Pedro Naranjo served up his corner kick to Reuss that he headed in past ECC goalie Braulino Ceballos to give the Vikings the 1-0 lead.
El Camino posted the equalizer in the 21st minute. Midfielder Kenny Garay headed in a cross pass from midfielder Leo Flores to tie the game.
Reuss struck again in the 44th minute for what will likely go down as the most impressive goal of the season for the Vikings.
Forward Arturo Guizar sent a shoulder-height line-drive pass from the right side towards the front of the goal. Reuss leaped and rocketed a one-time shot in mid-air past a diving Ceballos for an electrifying goal and a 2-1 LBCC advantage.
Midfielder Albert Jimenez added a much-needed insurance goal in the 75th minute from Guizar to put the game away at 3-1.
Garay added a another late goal for El Camino in the 89th minute to cut the lead to 3-2 with just moments to go in the game.
Long Beach received an impressive performance in goal from backup Eder Garcia. He posted five saves but also broke up numerous El Camino scoring chances.
Ceballos had four saves for El Camino (5-4-3 overall, 0-2-1 SCC).
With the win, Long Beach improved to 5-1-4 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. The Vikings are back in action on Friday (Oct 5) at 4 pm at East L.A. College.
