Men’s Soccer:
Vikings push unbeaten streak to 10 after win over El Camino
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team improved its unbeaten streak to 10 games as the Vikings earned a tough 2-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College Tuesday afternoon.
The win improved Long Beach to 8-0-2 overall and 3-0-0 in the SCC.
After a scoreless first half, the Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead late in the second.
Freshman forward Aaron Gutcher (Mayfair HS) got the Vikings on the board with his goal in the 55th minute. Freshman forward Chris Overton (Kennedy HS) fed Gutcher with a long cross pass form the right corner that he nailed past ECC goalie Byron Espana for the goal.
LBCC used some impressive one-touch passing on its way to its second goal. Freshman forward Rene Chicas (South Gate HS) connected with freshman midfielder Jerry Garcia (Cabrillo HS) with a pass in front of the net. Garcia hit the one-time shot in the net for the 2-0 lead in the 88th minute.
But El Camino came right back on the ensuing kick off to score in the 90th minute. Jose Lopez’ shot was deflected by Ever Montoya in front of the goal and redirected in to cut the LBCC lead by one.
El Camino made one last push in extra time, but Lopez’ shot in front of the goal sailed over the crossbar just before the final whistle.
Sophomore goalie Brendon Welch (St. John Bosco HS) posted 3 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
LBCC co-head coach Cameron Beaulac also praised the play of the LBCC defense --- sophomores Alex Placko (Wilson HS), Ivan Valencia (Jordan HS), Josh Newmaster (OFLC), and freshman Jessie Sandoval (Paramount HS).
Espana totaled 8 saves in goal for El Camino (9-3-0, 1-1-0 SCC).
Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Oct 6) when it travels to Compton College for a 4 pm SCC game.
