Men’s Soccer:
Vikings unbeaten streak snapped at 12, LBCC falls to No. 1 Mt. SAC 4-2
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team had its unbeaten streak stopped at 12 games with a 4-2 loss against visiting Mt. San Antonio College in South Coast Conference action on Tuesday.
No. 1 nationally-ranked Mt. SAC handed the Vikings their first loss of the season.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 9-1-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Mounties improved to 8-2-2 and 1-1-1 in the SCC.
The game was tied 1-1 at halftime before Mt. SAC scored a pair of unanswered goals early in the second to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the 51st minute.
But the Vikings pulled to within one after freshman Glen O’Gara redirected freshman Pedro Chavez’ free kick past Mt. SAC goalie Luis Ocampo to cut the Mountie lead to 3-2 in the 78th minute.
The comeback attempt came up short, as a penalty-kick goal by Mt. SAC’s Kenny Horne in the 90th minute officially put the game out of reach and sealed the win for Mt. SAC.
Freshman Warwick Newbold got the Vikings on the board in the first half, taking a long pass from freshman Alex Martinez in the 35th minute to tie the contest.
The Vikings return to action on Friday (Oct. 10) with a SCC game at L.A. Harbor College at 6 p.m.
