Men’s Soccer:
Vikings remain unbeaten at home after 3-0 win
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team extended its home unbeaten streak to 10 games with Tuesday’s 3-0 South Coast Conference win over El Camino College-Compton Center.
With the win, Long Beach improved to 6-2-4 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play, while Compton fell to 0-8-4 and 0-3-2 in the SCC.
The Vikings wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard in the third minute.
A Compton foul led to a LBCC free kick just outside of the penalty box. Freshman defender Pedro Naranjo chipped his pass to freshman midfielder Ernesto Mariscal in front of the net, which he redirected past Compton goalie Gabriel Enciso for the early goal and a 1-0 Long Beach lead.
The Vikings struck again just moments before the halftime whistle.
In the 45th minute, freshman midfielder Albert Jimenez led sophomore forward Aaron Gutcher with a long breakaway pass from the left side. Gutcher finished the scoring play to give the Vikings a 2-0 advantage at halftime
The game remained scoreless for the majority of the second until freshman midfielder Paco Prado got a put-back goal in the 90th minute after sophomore forward Bruno Contardo’s original shot was deflected.
Despite Compton taking 12 shots, only two were on goal. Both were stopped by freshman Eder Garcia as he posted the Vikings second shutout of the season.
Enciso had a tougher time in goal for Compton. Enciso came up with nine saves as the Vikings totaled 19 shots overall (12 on goal).
Today was the first of five straight home games for Long Beach. The Vikings return to action on Friday when they host Mt. San Antonio College in a SCC contest at 4 pm.
