Men’s Soccer:
Late goal gives Vikings 1-1 draw with L.A. Harbor
Sophomore Alex Reuss’ penalty kick goal in the 90th minute earned the Long Beach City College men’s soccer team a 1-1 South Coast Conference tie with visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday.
The draw moved Long Beach’s record to 6-4-5 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play, while Harbor went to 6-5-7 and 1-3-4 in SCC action.
The game was scoreless after an evenly-matched first 80 minutes of play.
Harbor finally got on the scoreboard first, getting a goal from Miguel Veliz in the 81st minute.
A free kick from midfield by Diego Rodriguez found Veliz in front of the net. After a scramble, his shot beat LBCC goalie Chris DeWalt for the 1-0 lead.
The Vikings were on the brink of a loss until sophomore midfielder Chris Overton was taken down on a breakaway in the box to earn a penalty kick.
Reuss’ PK shot to the top-right corner beat diving Harbor goalie Logan Adams to tie up the contest with just moments to go.
DeWalt posted six saves in goal for Long Beach, while Adams totaled three saves for Harbor. The Seahawks outshot the Vikings by a 14-12 margin.
LBCC is back in action on Tuesday (Oct 23) when it hosts Pasadena City College in a 4 pm SCC game.
