Men’s Soccer:
Long Beach earns impressive 1-0 SCC win over Cerritos
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team picked up one of its biggest wins of the season, defeating No. 3 nationally-ranked Cerritos College by a final score of 1-0 in a South Coast Conference game at LBCC on Tuesday.
The win improved Long Beach to 11-1-5 overall and 4-1-2 in the SCC while Cerritos fell to 12-3-1 and 4-2-1 in conference play.
The Vikings dominated the game control of the first half and outshot the Falcons by a 14-1 margin. Despite their play, they nearly had nothing to show for it.
The game remained scoreless until added time late in the first half. Sophomore Jose Caniz’ corner kick found the head of freshman Juan Guzman near the back post. Guzman redirected the kick past Cerritos goalie Pedro Velasquez for the eventual game-winner.
The Vikings’ defense played tough in the second half to make the goal stand and give LBCC the crucial SCC win.
Sophomore Chris DeWalt posted three saves in goal for the Vikings to earn his seventh shutout of the season.
Velasquez totaled seven saves during the first half and Diego Millan had three saves in a scoreless second for Cerritos.
Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Oct. 24) when the Vikings travel to El Camino College for a 4 p.m. conference game.
