Men’s Soccer:
Mariscal scores twice in Vikings' 2-2 tie against Pasadena
Freshman defender Ernesto Mariscal scored two goals and nearly had the game-winner as the Long Beach City College men's soccer team posted a 2-2 South Coast Conference tie against Pasadena City College on Monday.
Today’s game was originally scheduled for October 23 but was postponed because of the Southern California fires.
After a scoreless first half, Pasadena’s Daniel Simonian scored the first of his two goals in the 61st minute to put PCC on top.
Ten minutes later, Mariscal blasted a shot from nearly 30 yards out that slipped through the hands of PCC goalie Harmik Der Gevorgian to tie up the game in the 71st minute.
The momentum appeared to be shifting towards the Vikings after LBCC freshman goalie Chris DeWalt stopped a PCC penalty kick shot by Hagop Chirshian in the 72nd minute.
But Simonian regained the lead for the Lancers in the 74th minute. On a PCC corner kick, Leonardo Vergara sent a long cross pass that Simonian chipped in for the 2-1 Pasadena advantage.
In the 87th minute, Mariscal connected on a breakaway pass from sophomore midfielder Chris Overton to beat Der Gevorgian for the second time and once again tie up the game.
Mariscal nearly won the game in extra time. He blasted another deep shot that Der Gevorgian stopped, but when LBCC freshman midfielder headed in the deflected ball, he was called offside.
Der Gevorgian posted four saves in goal for Pasadena (6-7-3, 3-5-2 SCC).
For Long Beach (6-4-6, 3-3-3 SCC), DeWalt totaled five saves.
The Vikings are back in action tomorrow (Oct 30) when they host East L.A. College in a 4 pm SCC game.
