Vikings halt winless streak with 2-0 SCC victory over East L.A.
The Long Beach City College men's soccer team snapped a four-game winless streak with a 2-0 South Coast Conference victory over visiting East Los Angeles College on Tuesday.
Freshman goalkeeper Chris DeWalt totaled fives saves to help lead the Vikings to their third shutout of the season.
The win improved Long Beach to 7-4-6 overall and 4-3-3 in the SCC, while East L.A. dropped to 9-7-4 and 2-4-4 in conference play. Currently, the Vikings remain in third place in the SCC standings.
The Vikings jumped on East L.A. early, getting a quick goal in the seventh minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Freshman midfielder Albert Jimenez led a LBCC breakaway down the left sideline. Jimenez’ cross-pass found freshman defender Ernesto Mariscal near the far post. He headed the ball past East L.A. goalie Martin Romero for his third goal in two games.
The score remained 1-0 until midway through the second half. In the 62nd minute, freshman defender Jose Caniz fed sophomore forward Arthur Guizar with a breakaway pass. Guizar hit his one-time shot past a diving Romero for the Vikings’ final score of the contest.
Romero posted five saves for East L.A. in 87 minutes.
Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Nov 2) when it will face Compton College in a SCC game played at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4 pm.
