Men’s Soccer:
Long Beach pulls off 3-1 upset of Los Angeles Harbor
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team continued its push to earn a postseason berth and got a boost thanks to a 3-1 South Coast Conference win over visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday at LBCC.
The win improved the Viking men to 7-6-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the SCC while Harbor suffered just its fourth loss of the season and fell to 11-4-2 and 6-3-1 in conference play.
Long Beach controlled the tempo of the game and outshot Harbor by a 14-8 margin.
Despite that, the Seahawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Rudolfo Jaregui’s goal in the 14th minute.
But on the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings came right back to score the equalizer. Sophomore Albert Jimenez fed freshman Jesse Castaneda with a breakaway pass and he placed his shot past Harbor goalie Greg Williams to even up the game in the 14th minute.
From that point, it was all Long Beach.
Jimenez earned his second assist on Roberto Tapia’s goal in the 18th minute and Long Beach led 2-1 at halftime.
Sophomore Manuel Batista sealed the win in the 50th minute with his unassisted goal. After a Harbor foul was called just outside the penalty box, Batista curved his direct free kick around the wall and in to the back of the net to close out the scoring.
Freshman Luis Romero posted four saves in goal for Long Beach, while Williams came up with seven saves for Harbor.
The Long Beach men return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 3) when it travels to face rival Cerritos College in a 1 pm SCC game.
