Men’s Soccer:
No. 8 Vikings one win from SCC title; upset No. 2 Mt. SAC 2-1
The No. 8 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College men’s soccer team is just one win away from wrapping up its first South Coast Conference championship since 2000 after upsetting No. 2 Mt. San Antonio College 2-1 Friday afternoon at LBCC.
The win improved Long Beach to 15-2-2 overall and 10-2-0 in the SCC. It also extended their current winning streak to a season-best six games.
Freshman forward Arturo Guizar (Bellflower HS) and sophomore midfielder Marcos Canseco (Millikan HS) combined for both LBCC goals.
After a scoreless first half, the Vikings finally struck in the 63rd minute.
Canseco fed Guizar with a short breakaway pass up the middle. Guizar was able to beat a charging Mt. SAC goalie Ryan Eggleston with a quick shot to put the Vikings on the board.
Four minutes later, LBCC extended its lead. Canseco’s cross-pass from the left side found Guizar open in front of the goal. His first shot was saved by Eggleston, but Guizar blasted the rebound in to give Long Beach a commanding 2-0 lead in the 67th minute.
Mt. SAC made a late-game push, getting a header goal from midfielder Gabriel Tinoco in the 89th minute. But the Viking defense was able to hold on for the win.
LBCC sophomore goalie Brendon Welch posted 2 saves in the win.
For Mt. SAC (12-3-2, 8-3-1 SCC), Eggleston was credited with 2 saves.
The Vikings return to action on Tuesday (Nov. 7) when travel to face rival Cerritos College in a 3 pm SCC game. LBCC closes out the regular season next Friday at East Los Angeles College.
A win in either game will earn Long Beach and third-year co-head coaches Cameron Beaulac and Pat Noyes the conference title outright, while one tie will secure at least a share of the championship.
