Men’s Soccer:
Long Beach falls 2-0 at home to Cerritos in SCC contest
The Long Beach City College men’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 South Coast Conference loss to visiting Cerritos College on Tuesday.
The Falcons outshot the Vikings by an 11-3 margin despite neither team really controlling the ball on offense.
Cerritos got on the board in the 39th minute on a goal by forward Eduardo Padilla. Midfielder Cesar Perez fed Padilla with a cross-pass from the right corner that he put by LBCC goalkeeper Brendon Welch (St. John Bosco HS) for the 1-0 lead.
The game got ugly midway through the second half. LBCC’s Nnadozie Nwokeabia (Abuja, Nigeria) was issued a red card and ejected from the game in the 58th minute after he was called for an intentional flagrant foul.
The Falcons quickly capitalized on their one-man advantage, getting their second goal of the game in the 64th minute by defender Eric Gonzales. Padilla hit Gonzales with a pass on the run that he one-timed to the back of the net to bring the final score of 2-0.
Welch totaled three saves in goal for the Vikings, while Cerritos’ Miguel Lopez posted one save.
Long Beach fell to 8-11-4 overall and 3-8-0 in the South Coast Conference. Cerritos improved to 12-7-3 overall and 6-4-2 in conference play.
The Vikings return to action on Friday (Nov. 11) when they host Pasadena City College in a 3 p.m. SCC game.
