Men’s Track and Field:
Vikings finish fourth at SCC Finals, qualify 13 for SoCal Prelims

The Long Beach City College men’s track and field team totaled 55 points to finish in fourth place out of eight teams at the 2009 South Coast Conference Championships on Saturday at Compton College.

The Vikings compiled seven top-five finishes and more importantly, qualified 11 individuals and both relay teams for the Southern California Championships that begin this Saturday (May 2) at Mt. San Antonio College.

“I think fourth place is pretty respectable,” said LBCC head coach John Hall. “Not bad for a heavily injured team that is redshirting seven runners.”

Leading the way for Long Beach was freshman Michael Hancock. He cruised to first place in the 110-meter high hurdles with a new state-leading time of 14.12. Hancock also paced both the 4x100 (43.06) and 4x400 (3:23.40) relay teams to sixth place finishes that will also be moving on.

Sophomore Bobby Workman will have a busy weekend at the SoCal prelims, qualifying for four events. At the SCC Finals, Workman was second in 400-meter hurdles (54.65), sixth in the long jump (21-4 ¾), and competed on both relay teams.

Sophomore Yusef Sarmiento will also be competing in four events at SoCals. Sarmiento was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (55.25), took eighth in the high jump (6-0), and was a member of the 4x400 relay team. Sarmiento’s previous best time of 15.59 in the 110-meter high hurdles also qualified him for the SoCal prelims.

The Southern California Track & Field Championships are set for May 2 (prelims) and 9 (finals) at Mt. San Antonio College.
