Braman, Prudhomme lead Vikings to third place finish at SoCal Finals; qualify eight for state
Long Beach City College freshman Bryan Braman won the javelin and sophomore Vannie Prudhomme finished first in the 110-meter hurdles to lead the men’s track and field team to a third place finish at the Southern California Championships in Bakersfield College on Saturday.
LBCC totaled 56 points to finish behind SoCal champion Riverside (141.3 points) and runner up Moorpark (70).
Braman had a busy afternoon. After easily taking first in the javelin with a mark of 214-7, Braman went on to take fourth place in the long jump (23-7) and was seventh in the high jump (6-7).
Braman will compete in next weekend’s state championships on May 16-17 in Cerritos in the javelin and long jump. He was just edged in qualifying for state in the high jump.
Prudhomme cruised to first in the high hurdles with a time of 13.94. His season-best time also provisionally qualified him for the 2008 USA Olympic team trials. Prudhomme has yet to lose a high hurdle race since his arrival at LBCC.
Prudhomme also went on to take second in the high jump at 6-11. He will compete in both events at the state championships.
The men’s 4x100 meter relay team of Bobby Workman, Prudhomme, Kyle Toomer, and John Marshall qualified for the state meet with its third-place time of 41.33 at SoCals.
Other state qualifiers include Ricco McCloud, Marquan Jackson and Alberto Espinoza. McCloud was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at 54.80, Jackson finished third in the 110-meter hurdles with 14.57 and Espinoza finished fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:27.52.
Marshall finished eighth in the 200 meters (21.80) and Workman was ninth in the 400 hurdles (59.80), but will not advance to state.
LBCC looks to win its first state title since 1995. |
