Hancock edged in 110 high hurdles, Long Beach 21st at State Championships
With just three competitors, the Long Beach City College men’s track and field team wrapped up its season with a 21st place finish at the 2009 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Track and Field Championships in San Mateo this past weekend.
Long Beach totaled 15 points at the two-day event. Riverside City College won the state title with 68 points.
LBCC freshman Michael Hancock was the Vikings’ top finisher, taking second in a thrilling photo-finish 110-meter high hurdles final. Hancock, who had the state’s top time (13.77) in the event this season, hit the finish line at 13.87 and was just edged by Merritt College’s Ray Stewart at 13.83.
According to LBCC head coach John Hall, Hancock slipped out of the starting blocks and had to catch up the rest of the race. Hancock was the South Coast Conference’s running athlete of the year this season.
Freshman Ryan Lauderdale took fifth place in the javelin with a throw of 180-3. Sophomore Bobby Workman ran a personal-best 53.70 in the 400-meter hurdles to take sixth place.
Prior to the state finals, LBCC took 15th at the Southern California Championships and was fourth at the SCC Finals. |
