Men’s Volleyball:
Vikings overcome errors to post 3-1 win over Golden West
The LBCC men’s volleyball team improved its record to 2-0 early in the season with its 3-1 non-conference win over visiting Golden West College on Friday night.
The Vikings won the match by scores of 30-28, 30-28, 26-30, and 30-26. The loss dropped Golden West to 1-1 overall.
Long Beach had to overcome a barrage of its own errors to pull out the win.
Leading 2-0, the Vikings looked to take game three for the sweep. With the score tied 23-23 in the third, LBCC committed six errors down the stretch to give the Rustlers the 30-26 win.
It was the same story in game four except for the final outcome. 13 of Golden West’s 26 points in the fourth game came off LBCC errors.
Once again the score was tied at 23, but Long Beach rallied for six straight points to jump ahead 29-23 and eventually take the match with the 30-26 win.
“We made the match tougher than it should have been,” said LBCC head coach Randy Totorp. “We have a young team this year; they are going to make some errors. We can work on that. And we’re still playing around with our lineups trying to figure out what works best. The guys never panicked, and I’m proud of them for that.”
Freshman outside hitter Casey Bennett led the Vikings with 18 kills, eight digs, and three blocks.
Freshman middle blocker Justin Flake added 13 kills and two digs, and freshman setter Chuck Chamberlain added 32 assists, eight kills, and seven digs.
LBCC returns to action next Friday (Feb. 15) when it travels to San Diego Mesa College for a 6 p.m. non-conference match. |
