State champions open match-play with win at Golden West
The defending state champion Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team began its 2005 match schedule with a 3-2 win Friday night at Golden West College.
Long Beach took a quick 2-0 lead before needing all five games to finally put away the Rustlers. The Vikings won the match by scores of 25-20, 26-24, 21-25, 22-25, and 15-12.
“It was an ugly win, but at least we got it” said second-year LBCC head coach Randy Totorp.
Returning state tournament most valuable player Jonathan Charette (Pearl City, Hawaii) led the Vikings with 27 kills and five blocks.
LBCC (1-0) returns to action on Friday (Feb. 17) when it plays its annual Alumni Game at 6 pm.
