Men’s Volleyball:
Long Beach rolls through Irvine Valley 3-1 to remain unbeaten
The defending state champion Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team kept its perfect record intact with its 3-1 non-conference win over visiting Irvine Valley College on Friday night.
Although the Vikings lost their first game of the season, they pulled out the win by scores of 30-26, 22-30, 30-23, and 30-24. The victory was the Vikings’ 22nd in-a-row dating back to last season.
“This was out first tough match of the season,” said LBCC head coach Randy Totorp. “We started strong but lost our focus in Game 2. Irvine Valley is a good team. I have a feeling we’ll see them again in the playoffs.”
Sophomore opposite hitter Adam Church posted a team-best 18 kills to go with 3 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Naseri Tumanuvao had 14 kills, 13 digs and 3 blocks while sophomore middle blocker Chris Ongay added 13 kills and 11 blocks.
The loss dropped Irvine Valley to 3-1 on the season while the Vikings moved to 4-0 overall. Long Beach is back in action on Wednesday (Feb. 21) when it travels to San Diego City College for a 6 pm non-conference match. |
