Men’s Volleyball:
Long Beach comeback falls short, lose to Grossmont in five
The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team suffered a tough 3-2 loss to Grossmont College in its 2005 home opener Wednesday night. LBCC lost the first two games before rallying to win the next two, but came up short in the deciding fifth game.
The defending state champion Vikings lost the interconference match by scores of 20-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, and 12-15.
“It was a great five-game match,” said second-year LBCC head coach Randy Totorp. “That’s what these interconference match are all about — finding the right team that will play consistent and hopefully carry you through the rest of the season. We went through this same situation last year.”
Sophomore opposite-side hitter Jonathan Charette (Pearl City, Hawaii) led the Vikings with 16 kills, while freshman Rich Camerlengo (Commack, NY) added 13 kills and 5 blocks. Freshman libero Dana Kaleiohi (Pearl City, Hawaii) chipped in with a team-best 17 digs.
The loss dropped LBCC to 1-1 on the season, while Grossmont improved to 2-1 overall.
“Grossmont is a good team that played a great match,” Totorp said. “I expect them to be a contender for their conference championship.”
The Vikings return to action on Friday (Feb. 25, 6 pm) when they open up the Western State Conference schedule at home against Orange Coast College. |
