Men’s Volleyball:
Vikings push home winning streak to 23 with 3-2 win over SBCC
The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team rallied in game five to defeat visiting Santa Barbara City College 3-2 in a Western State Conference match on Wednesday night. LBCC won the match by scores of 30-24, 25-30, 30-25, 25-30, and 15-12.
The win extended LBCC’s home winning streak to 23 matches and improved the Vikings’ record to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the WSC. Santa Barbara dropped to 8-4 and 3-2 in conference play.
The Vikings’ last loss at home came on April 13, 2005 when SBCC pulled out a 3-2 victory. The team that last beat Long Beach on its home floor nearly snapped the Vikings’ four season-long streak.
LBCC cruised to a 30-24 win in game one, but Santa Barbara came right back to even the match up with its 30-25 win in the second game.
Long Beach had to come from behind to steal game three from Santa Barbara. The Vaqueros held a 23-20 lead before LBCC rallied to tie up the game at 23-23. After a SBCC timeout, the Vikings went on to outscore Santa Barbara 7-3 the rest of the game to come away with the 30-25 win.
In game four, SBCC jumped out to a commanding 11-5 advantage and never looked back in taking the game 30-25 to force a deciding fifth game.
The Vaqueros rallied to a 10-7 lead before the Vikings went on a 5-0 run to jump ahead 12-10. SBCC tied it up at 12-12, but three hitting errors by Santa Barbara gave Long Beach the 15-12 game win as well as the match.
Freshman middle blocker Tyler Jenkins had a season-high 16 kills, including four in the deciding fifth game, to go with seven blocks. Freshman middle blocker Antwain Aguillard posted 15 kills and three blocks.
Freshman right side Chuck Chamberlain added nine kills and three blocks and freshman setter Andrew Marques totaled 70 assists and six digs.
Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Mar. 21) when it travels to El Camino College for a 6 p.m. WSC match. |
