Men’s Volleyball:

Vikings cruise to sweep of SBCC; one win away from WSC title

The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team is just one win away from wrapping up its fourth straight Western State Conference championship after Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over visiting Santa Barbara City College.

 The Vikings cruised to the sweep, winning by scores of 30-20, 30-14, and 30-26 to improve their record to 14-1 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The loss dropped Santa Barbara to 1-14 and 0-8 in the WSC.

Head coach Randy Totorp was able to turn to his bench midway through the match to get his reserves some time on the court.

 Freshman right side Carlos Dorado led the Vikings with 10 kills and added 2 blocks. Freshman outside hitter Shaun Bluth had 8 kills, 5 digs, and 4 blocks, while freshman outside hitter Joseph Strotman chipped in with 8 kills and 5 digs.

“It was good that we were able to get some of our freshmen in there that haven’t had the chance to play that much this season,” said Totorp. “We have a big match on Friday. Hopefully we can wrap up that win and the conference title.”

Tonight was the final home match for six LBCC sophomores: Richard Carmerlengo, Adam Church, Brett Massetti, Chris Ongay, Derrick Seay, and Naseri Tumanuvao.

Long Beach plays at Santa Monica College on Friday (Apr 6) at 6 pm. The Vikings close out the regular season on April 18 at Moorpark College.
