Men’s Volleyball:
Vikings continue push for conference title, beat Pierce 3-1
The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team continued its run for a second straight Western State Conference title by beating Los Angeles Pierce College 3-1 Friday night at LBCC.
The Vikings dropped the first game 23-25, but won the next three by scores of 25-14, 25-22, and 25-18.
Sophomore opposite-side hitter Jonathan Charette (Pearl City, HI) had a good all-around match, posting 13 kills and 9 digs. Freshman outside hitter Ryun Georges (Los Gatos, CA) led LBCC with 14 kills, and sophomore outside hitter Rich Parris (Marina HS) chipped in with 8 digs and served up 4 aces.
“We didn’t play all that well tonight,” said LBCC head coach Randy Totorp. “But we were good enough to win. We’ll have to play a lot better next week if we want to win the conference title. Unless Santa Barbara or Santa Monica gets upset in the next couple of matches, we are going to have to win out our schedule to achieve that goal.”
With the win, Long Beach improved to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in Western State Conference action. L.A. Pierce, the 2004 state champion runner-up to the Vikings, fell to 1-12 overall and 0-7 in the WSC.
The Vikings host Santa Barbara City College on Wednesday (Apr. 13) at 6 pm in a conference match. They host Moorpark on April 20 in their final home match of the season and close the regular season schedule at Santa Monica on April 22. |
