Long Beach rolls to 15th straight win, beat Santa Monica 3-2

The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team kept its perfect record intact, but needed five games to defeat visiting Santa Monica College Wednesday night in the Vikings’ final Western State Conference home match of the season.

LBCC won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 22-25, 26-24, and 15-13. The win improved the Vikings to 15-0 overall and 9-0 in conference play, while Santa Monica fell to 10-6 and 5-5 in the WSC.

In his final home match as a Viking, sophomore outside hitter Sam Pech (Jordan HS) had a match-high 17 kills to go with three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Ryun Georges (Los Gatos, CA) led LBCC with five blocks to go with nine kills, and freshman outside hitter Naseri Tumanuvao (Lakewood HS) chipped in with 10 kills and two blocks.

Long Beach looks to close out the regular season with a perfect record on the road this Friday at 6 p.m. when it travels to Moorpark College for its final Western State Conference match of the season.

By clinching its third straight conference championship last week, the Vikings received a first-round bye in the state championship tournament.

LBCC begins postseason play on Friday, April 28 at Irvine Valley College in the semifinals of the state championships. Head coach Randy Totorp looks to capture his second state title in three years.
