Men’s Volleyball:
Vikings secure playoff spot with regular-season finale sweep of Moorpark
The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team wrapped up the 2008 regular season with a 3-0 Western State Conference win over visiting Moorpark College on Friday.
The victory secures at least a second-place finish in the WSC and gives the Vikings a home regional playoff match on Tuesday, April 22.
Long Beach won tonight’s match by scores of 30-26, 30-27, and 30-25 to close out its regular season schedule with a 13-4 overall record and 7-3 mark in the WSC. Moorpark dropped to 6-11 and 2-8 in conference play.
After rolling to wins in game one and two, the Vikings had to come-from-behind midway in the third to pull out the sweep.
LBCC trailed 15-18 before cruising to an 11-2 run to jump ahead 26-20.
Sophomore outside hitter Joseph Strotman led the Vikings with 14 kills, two blocks, and four digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Bojan Vucicevic added 12 kills, two blocks, and four digs. Freshman setter Andrew Marques paced the Vikings with 37 assists and added two blocks and two aces.
LBCC could still win a share of the WSC championship but needs an upset win by L.A. Pierce College over Santa Monica tonight.
Regardless, Long Beach should receive the WSC’s second seed into the regional playoffs and will host the Pacific Coast Conference’s No. 3 seed next Tuesday. The winner advances the state championship semifinals next Thursday (Apr. 24) at Irvine Valley College. |
