Vikings
clinch conference title after 3-0 win over Santa
Monica
The
LBCC men’s volleyball team clinched at least
a share of the Western State Conference championship
tonight after sweeping visiting Santa Monica College
30-22, 30-28, and 30-26.
It
was Long Beach’s 11th straight win and improved
the Vikings’ record to 13-2 overall and
9-0 in the WSC.
Sophomore
Malu Seiuli (Jordan HS) led the way for LBCC with
14 kills, 7 digs, and 6 blocks. Freshman right
side hitter Jonathan Charette (Pearl City, Hawaii)
added 11 kills, 5 blocks, and 8 digs, while freshman
setter Garrett Morales (Millikan) dished out 47
assists and added 8 digs.
Long
Beach travels to L.A. Pierce College on Friday
(7 pm) for the regular season finale. A LBCC win
would give the Vikings the conference title outright.
Just one month ago, Long Beach handed Pierce its
only conference loss of the season, a 3-1 defeat
at LBCC.
Both
Long Beach and Pierce have already qualified for
the state championship semifinals, scheduled for
May 1 at Orange Coast College.
First-year
head coach Randy Totorp’s 2004 conference
championship is LBCC’s first since the 2000
season.
With
the loss, Santa Monica fell to 7-8 overall and
2-7 in the WSC.
