Long Beach opens playoffs on Tuesday at 6 pm vs. Palomar
The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team will host Palomar College on Tuesday (Apr. 22) at 6 p.m. in a regional playoff match. The winner will advance to face Irvine Valley College on Thursday (Apr. 24) in the state championship semifinals at 8 p.m. in Irvine.

Defending state champion Irvine Valley College and Santa Monica College have been named the top seeds for this weekend’s California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Men’s Volleyball Championship tournament. The event is set to take place this Thursday and Saturday, April 24 and 26, at Irvine Valley College.
Four teams will play regional final matches this Tuesday (Apr 22) to earn a chance to face Irvine Valley and Santa Monica in the state championship semifinals on Thursday.
Long Beach City College hosts Palomar College at 6 p.m. while Orange Coast College hosts Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the right to advance.
The winner of the Orange Coast/Santa Barbara match will face Santa Monica in Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. semifinal and Long Beach/Palomar winner will take on Irvine Valley in Thursday’s 8 p.m. semifinal.
Irvine Valley looks to win its second consecutive state title and third overall (1993, 2007). Irvine Valley compiled a 16-2 overall record and cruised to its third straight Pacific Coast Conference championship with an 11-1 mark. Irvine Valley makes its fourth straight postseason appearance. Irvine Valley defeated Long Beach 3-2 in last year’s state final.
Santa Monica captured the Western State Conference championship with an 8-2 record and is 11-5 overall this season. Santa Monica looks to capture its first state championship. Last year, Santa Monica fell to Orange Coast 3-2 in the regional playoffs. Santa Monica is led by WSC most valuable player Collin Williamson.
Long Beach had its string of four straight Western State Conference titles come to an end this season. Long Beach finished second with a 7-3 mark and is 13-4 overall this season. Long Beach has won six state championships (1976, 1980, 1982, 1985, 2004, 2006).
Its opponent Palomar looks to win its first state title. Palomar finished third in the Pacific Coast Conference with an 8-4 record and is 10-8 this season. Earlier this year (Feb. 22), Long Beach swept Palomar 3-0 at home.
Orange Coast closed the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and was 9-3 in Pacific Coast Conference play. Orange Coast has won two state titles (1991, 1994). Last year, Orange Coast fell to Long Beach 3-1 in the state championship semifinals.
Its opponent Santa Barbara finished tied for third place in the Western State Conference, but earned the playoff bid over El Camino College on a tie-breaker. Santa Barbara is 11-6 overall and closed its conference schedule with a 6-4 mark. Santa Barbara looks to win its first state title. Earlier this season (Feb. 15), Orange Coast swept Santa Barbara 3-0 at home. |
