Men’s Volleyball:
Long Beach advances to state championship semifinals after 3-1 win over Palomar
The Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team will make its fourth trip in five years to the state championship final four thanks to its 3-1 regional playoff win over visiting Palomar College on Tuesday night.
The Vikings won the match by scores of 30-23, 30-26, 28-30, and 30-26 to set up their state championship semifinal matchup against Irvine Valley College on Thursday night (Apr. 24) at 8 p.m. at IVC.
LBCC takes a 14-4 overall record to the state tournament.
The game is a rematch of the 2007 state championship final. Irvine Valley pulled out the five-game win last year in Santa Monica to capture the state title.
Irvine Valley is 16-2 this season and won its third straight Pacific Coast Conference title with an 11-1 record.
Earlier this season, Irvine Valley swept the Vikings 3-0 in Irvine on February 20.
Orange Coast College (14-6) defeated Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday 3-1 and will face Western State Conference champion Santa Monica College at 5:30 p.m. in Thursday’s first semifinal match.
The winners of Thursday matches will play on Saturday (Apr. 26) at 7 p.m. at IVC for the state championship.
Long Beach won its last state championship in 2006 at Irvine Valley College. The Vikings have won five state titles overall (1976, 1980, 1982, 1985, 2004, 2006). |
