LBCC captures WSC title; two wins from state championship
Defending state champion Long Beach City College has been named one of the top two seeds for this weekend’s California Community College Commission on Athletics Men’s Volleyball Championship tournament, which is set to take place this Friday and Saturday, April 27-28, at Santa Monica College.
Four teams will play regional final matches this Tuesday (Apr 23) to earn a chance to face Long Beach and other top seed Irvine Valley College in the state championship semifinals on Friday.
Pierce College hosts Grossmont College while Orange Coast College hosts Santa Monica College on Tuesday for the right to advance. Both matches are set for 7 p.m.
The winner of the Pierce vs. Grossmont match will face Irvine Valley in Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal and the Santa Monica vs. Orange Coast winner will take on Long Beach in the 8 p.m. semifinal.
Long Beach captured its fourth straight Western State Conference championship with an 8-2 record. Pierce tied LBCC for the WSC title, but LBCC earned the top seed and regional playoff bye thanks to two head-to-head wins against Pierce.
Long Beach brings a 15-2 overall record and looks to capture its third state title in four seasons (2004, 2006) under fourth-year head coach Randy Totorp.
Last year, the Vikings completed an undefeated 18-0 season to win the state title. The Vikings continued the unbeaten run, extending their winning streak to 30 matches late into the 2007 season.
Irvine Valley compiled a 15-3 overall record and finished tied with Orange Coast for the Pacific Coast Conference championship with a 10-2 mark, but received the regional playoff bye on a tie-breaker.
For IVC, it was its second straight conference title. Irvine Valley also makes its third straight postseason appearance. IVC looks to win its second state title after winning it in 1993.
Orange Coast, co-champions of the Pacific Coast Conference, closed the year with a 16-3 overall record and was 10-2 in PCC play. OCC has won two state titles (1991, 1994).
Its opponent Santa Monica should receive plenty support as the host college and finished third in the Western State Conference with a 6-4 conference record and is 10-7 overall.
Pierce has won five state titles (1992, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003), the most in state history. Pierce was co-champions of the WSC with an 8-2 mark and takes a 13-4 overall record into the playoffs.
Grossmont was third in the PCC with a 9-3 record and closed the regular season at 13-5. |
