STATE CHAMPIONS

Men’s
Volleyball:
Long
Beach ends Pierce streak, takes 2004 state title
Tournament
MVP Jonathan Charette (Pearl City HS, Hawaii)
tallied 10 kills, 10 digs and two blocks to lead
Long Beach to a 30-26, 30-26, 28-30, 30-32, 15-10
win over Western State Conference rival L.A. Pierce,
Saturday evening in the Citi California Community
Colleges Commission on Athletics Men’s Volleyball
Championships at Golden West College.
The
Vikings ended the Brahmas run of four-straight
state championships, winning their fourth title
in program history and first since 1985.
“I
was a player at Long Beach and we had a good team
my second year, but we didn’t finish things the
way we should have,” said elated head coach Randy
Totorp , who claims his first crown. “This win
is especially sweet, coming back to do things
right. This program has always had so much potential
and our kids have worked hard since the first
day in August until now and it showed tonight.”
The
Vikings went the distance in two matches on Saturday,
knocking off Orange Coast in five games earlier
in the day before outlasting the Brahmas in a
tense title match. The Vikings were also able
to avenge a three-game sweep in Woodland Hills
last Friday to end the regular season.
Thomas
Vito led the way for the Vikings (15-3) with 16
kills and six digs while Malu Seiuli ( Jordan
) added 15 kills and five blocks to go along with
14 kills and seven digs from Sam Pech ( Jordan
). Larry Taylor ( Jordan ) also tossed in 11 kills
as setter Garrett Morales (Millikan) dished out
57 assists.
Quentin
Wilson led all players with 29 kills and added
five blocks for the Brahmas (13 5), making their
6th straight championship match appearance. Greg
Foote tossed in 20 kills and three aces while
Kris Gupilan dished out 63 assists and added eight
digs. Philip Sandoval led all players with 15
digs.
