Mellinger's two homeruns power Vikings to 4-3 win over Saddleback
Freshman catcher Sasia Mellinger belted two homeruns, including a walk-off two-run homerun in the eighth inning, to lead the Long Beach City College softball team to a 4-3 non-conference win over Saddleback College on Friday.
Mellinger went 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. She nailed a solo homerun to right-center field in the bottom of the fourth and the game-winning blast to center in the eighth.
Saddleback tied up the game at 2-2 with a run in the top of the seventh and pulled ahead in the eighth. Second baseman Traci Everett led off the frame with a double to center, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and came in to score on a ground out by shortstop Lindsay Murray.
Down 3-2, sophomore Sarah Frudakis led off the bottom of the eighth with a double down the left field line. She then went to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman left fielder Jessica Amador to set up Mellinger’s heroics.
Frudakis went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) and 5 hits. Freshman Brittni Rodriguez (1-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing one run and one hit in the eighth.
Traci Quinn picked up the loss for Saddleback (2-1). Quinn (2-1) allowed four earned runs and 8 eights over 7.1 innings pitched. Center fielder Brittany Ash went 2 for 3 with a run to lead the Gauchos at the plate.
The win improved Long Beach to 2-1 overall. The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday (Feb. 6) when they travel to face Riverside Community College in a 3 pm non-conference game. |
