LBCC snaps three-game losing streak win 8-0 win over Rio Hondo
The Long Beach City College softball team cruised to an 8-0 five-inning mercy-rule win over visiting Rio Hondo College on Monday at LBCC.
The non-conference victory snapped the Vikings three-game losing streak and improved their record to 6-5. Rio Hondo remains winless this season at 0-11.
Sophomore Christine Gonzalez (5-3) allowed just three hits and struck out four in the complete-game win.
Leading 2-0, the Vikings blew the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. LBCC sent 10 batters to the plate, collected four hits and took advantage of three Rio Hondo errors to go up 8-0 and put in effect the eight-run mercy rule.
Sophomore shortstop Rose Vargas (3 for 3), freshman third baseman Valentina Nabayan (3 for 3), and sophomore first baseman Vanessa Samudio (1 for 3) all drove in two runs.
Sophomore second baseman Jean Gallegos also contributed going 2 for 2 with two runs.
Jennifer Lopez earned the loss for Rio Hondo, allowing eight runs (six earned) and 11 hits over four innings.
Long Beach returns to action on Wednesday (Feb. 25) when it opens South Coast Conference play at home against L.A. Harbor College at 3 p.m. |
