Softball:
Vikings roll to 10-0 mercy-rule
win over El Camino
The Long Beach City College softball team cruised to a 10-0 five-inning South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Tuesday. LBCC’s fifth straight win improved its record to 25-10 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
The Vikings pounded out 12 hits off El Camino starter Kaycee Wilke.
Long Beach jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a RBI single by left fielder Vanessa Samudio that drove in center fielder Karina Martinez.
In the second, the Vikings rallied for three two-out runs. Designated player Monique Ogata scored on a fielding error and catcher Alyssa Belmontes drove in two runs with a single to put LBCC up 4-0.
LBCC put the game away in the bottom of the fourth with six runs. Shortstop Rose Vargas and Ogata had RBI doubles, while third baseman Valetina Nabayan and pinch hitter Renae Ramirez had run-scoring singles.
An error on pitcher Christine Gonzalez’ grounder also allowed two more runs to score and put in effect the eight run mercy rule.
Martinez (2 for 3, 2 runs), Belmontes (2 for 2, 2 RBI, 1 run), and Samudio (2 for 3, 1 RBI) all had a pair of hits to lead LBCC at the plate.
Gonzalez earned her 20th win of the season to improve to 20-7 overall. She scattered two hits over five innings while striking out two for the complete-game shutout win.
With the loss, Wilke fell to 6-9 overall for El Camino (6-25, 0-9 SCC). She allowed 10 runs (only four earned) and 12 hits over four innings.
Long Beach returns to action on Thursday (Apr 9) when it hosts East Los Angeles College in a 3 p.m. SCC game. |
