Vikings get No. 6 seed for Southern California Playoffs
The Long Beach City College softball team has been named the No. 6 seed for next weekend’s Southern California Regional Playoffs. For the second straight season, LBCC will host Los Angeles Mission College (No. 11 seed) on May 2-3 in the best-of-three opening round of the postseason.
Game 1 is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. with Game 2 scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday. Game 3 if necessary would be played at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Under second-year co-head coaches Melissa Angel and Jack Hutchinson, Long Beach closed the regular season last week by finishing third in the South Coast Conference with an 11-7 record. The Vikings will take a 31-12 overall mark into the postseason. LBCC has qualified for the playoffs in 18 of the last 19 seasons.
L.A. Mission was champions of the Western State Conference Blue Division with a 17-5 record and is 29-9 overall. The two squads have not met this season.
The winner of the series will take on the winner of No. 3 Mt. San Antonio and No. 14 Antelope Valley in the Super Regionals on May 9-10. Should LBCC win its series, the Vikings would either play at No. 3 Mt. SAC or host No. 14 Antelope Valley should AVC pull off the upset.
Super Regionals winners advance to the state championship tournament on May 15-18 in Salinas.
Last season, LBCC swept L.A. Mission and took two games out of three from Saddleback College to qualify for the state championships for the first time since 2003. |
