Softball:

Samudio named State Co-MVP, Nabayan earns All-State honors

The honors for Long Beach City College sophomore left fielder Vanessa Samudio continue to roll in. Samudio, last week named the South Coast Conference Player of the Year, has been named the State’s Co-Most Valuable Player. Also earning state honors is freshman third baseman Valentina Nabayan, who was named first-team All-State.

Samudio is just the third Viking in the program’s history and first since 1995 to be named State MVP, joining catcher Courtney Asbee (1991) and shortstop Chris Benyak (1995).

Samudio, who shares the honor with Rochelle Vanyi of Sierra College, is having one of the best seasons in LBCC history. For the year, she is batting .512 with 62 hits, 15 doubles, seven homeruns, and 39 RBI.

Samudio is already among the top three in numerous categories in the LBCC record book and is on the verge of breaking other all-time marks.

Her current .512 batting average would rank No. 1 if the season was over. Her two-year career average of .426 would also top that list. She’s also LBCC’s all-time homerun hitter with 11.

On career lists, Samudio currently ranks second in hits (117), doubles (26), and RBI (83). She is also third all-time with 50 runs.

Nabayan is having a standout first year for the Vikings. She leads the team with 42 RBI and 16 doubles and is second to Samudio with a .431 batting average, 59 hits, and five homeruns.

The No. 6 seeded Vikings (31-12) host the No. 11 Los Angeles Mission College Eagles (29-9) in Round 1 Southern California Regional Playoffs this weekend. Game 1 is set for Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by Game 2 on Sunday at 12 p.m. with Game 3, if necessary, to follow. The winner advances to the Super Regionals on May 9-10.
