Late rally comes up short, LBCC edged by El Camino 59-52
Sophomore guard Dijon Franklin poured in a game-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Long Beach City College women's basketball team was edged by visiting El Camino College 59-52 in a South Coast Conference South Division game at the Hall of Champions Gym on Friday.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 5-19 overall and 1-3 in the South Division while El Camino improved to 10-13 and 3-1 in division play.
Long Beach trailed 29-17 at halftime but when out to outscore El Camino 35-30 over the final 20 minutes of the game.
A late second-half rally by the Vikings came up just short. Down by 10 points (54-44) with 1:39 left in the game, the Vikings went on a short 6-1 run, capped by Franklin's three-pointer with 15 seconds to go, to cut the Warriors advantage to five points (55-50).
But ECC's Brittany Groves converted four straight free throws to close out the game and secure the win for the Warriors.
Alisha Hill led El Camino with 14 points. Courtney Reise pulled down 14 rebounds to go with eight points.
Kendra James came off the bench for Long Beach to score 15 points and grab a team-best nine rebounds.
The LBCC women have a bye next week and return to the floor on February 13 at 5:30 p.m. for a SCC South contest at Cerritos College. |
