Women’s Basketball:
James scores 27 in LBCC’s
79-67 win over Barstow
Sophomore forward Kendra James posted a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Long Beach City College women’s basketball team to a 79-67 non-conference win over Barstow Community College in its season opener on Wednesday at the Hall of Champions Gym.
The Vikings also got a big game from sophomore guard Dijon Franklin as she posted 24 points.
Barstow stormed out to an 11-4 advantage five minutes into the game before the Vikings came alive.
Long Beach outscored Barstow 16-4 over the next five minutes to tie the game at 15-15 with 10:14 left in the first half.
And from then, it was all Long Beach. The Vikings cruised to 11-0 run to go up 26-15 with 6:26 remaining and led 44-29 at the break thanks to 19 first-half points from James and 14 from Franklin.
Long Beach held its biggest lead of the night (18 points) at 62-44 at the 13:08 mark before Barstow went on 10-0 run to cut LBCC’s lead to just eight points at 62-54 with 8:52 to go.
With numerous Vikings in foul trouble down the stretch, freshman guard Brittney Cruz came off the bench in the second half and sparked LBCC with five points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Barstow got within eight points again with 1:20 left in the game, but it was too late as the Vikings were able to convert on free throws and hold on for the win.
Sophomore forward Brittney Pham led Barstow (0-1) with 20 points and sophomore forward DeAira Williams had a game-high 12 rebounds.
Long Beach (1-0) is back in action this weekend (Nov 9-10) at the Santa Barbara City College tournament. |
