Lajkowicz' double-double not enough as LBCC loses to East LA

The Long Beach City College women’s basketball team suffered a close 56-50 South Coast Conference interdivision loss to East Los Angeles College on Saturday night at the Hall of Champions Gym.

The loss dropped Long Beach to 3-12 overall while East L.A. improved to 6-10.

LBCC held a narrow 32-31 lead at halftime before faltering in the second. East L.A. went on to outscore Long Beach 25-18 over the final 20 minutes of the contest.

The Vikings built up a 38-37 advantage at the 15:04 mark, but East L.A. went on an 8-0 scoring run over the next seven and a half minutes to take its biggest lead of 45-38 with 7:26 left in the game.

Long Beach got within three points (51-48) with 1:50 to go after sophomore center Wendy Robles’ layup, but would get no closer.

Freshman forward Cristina Lajkowicz posted a double-double in the Vikings’ defeat with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Dijon Franklin led the Vikings with 18 points and five assists.

East L.A. was paced to the win by the play of guard Megan Iloff. She led the Huskies 22 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and six steals.

Long Beach is back in action next Thursday (Jan. 3) when it travels to West Los Angeles College for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game.
