Women’s Soccer:
No. 3 Vikings open up season with
2-0 shutout at Orange Coast
Sophomores Rosa Gudiel (Woodside) and Christina Pauley (Santa Ynez Valley) both scored goals and freshman goal keeper Sarah Phillips (Los Alamitos) posted five saves to lead the No. 3 nationally-ranked LBCC women’s soccer team to a 2-0 shutout win at Orange Coast on Sunday in their 2005 season opener.
The Vikings opened up the scoring in the 15th minute. Sophomore Mallory Olloque (Millikan) fed Gudiel with the pass for the assist and the early 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until late in the second. In the 72nd minute, sophomore Stephanie Leotti (Rowland) picked up the assist on Pauley’s score.
Phillips, playing in her first game with the Vikings, came up with numerous big plays to preserve the shutout.
The win pushed Long Beach’s unbeaten streak to 76 games, while LBCC is 1-0 to begin the season.
The Vikings return to action on Tuesday (Aug. 30) when they travel to Palomar College for a 3 pm non-conference game.
