Women’s Soccer:
Long Beach hands No. 8 Sequoias first loss of season, wins 4-1
Freshmen Nancy Gandarilla (Millikan HS) and Marisa Browne (Lakewood HS) both scored two goals each to lead the Long Beach City College women’s soccer team to a 4-1 non-conference win over visiting No. 8 nationally-ranked College of the Sequoias (Visalia) on Thursday.
For Sequoias (5-1-0), it was its first loss of the season, while the Vikings, currently unranked in the national poll, improved to 3-2-2 overall.
Long Beach controlled the game with its quick tempo and outshot COS by a 17-6 margin, including 9-3 in shots on goal.
LBCC got on the board first in the 22nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Christina Graham (Edison HS) sent a cross-pass from the left side in front of the net. Browne got just enough of it to redirect its path in goal to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
COS came back to tie it up in the 31st minute. Diana Santillan connected with Andrea Bolanos on a breakaway. Bolanos’ shot bounced off the outstretched hand of LBCC goalie Sarah Phillips (Los Alamitos HS) and into the net to make the score 1-1.
Long Beach regained the lead for good in the 33rd minute. Freshman midfielder Brenda Gonzalez (Hawthorne HS) sent a long pass from the half line to Gandarilla. She beat defender Vanessa Urena on the one-one-one breakaway and put her shot past COS goalie Lindsey Porter to give LBCC the 2-1 advantage.
Moments after the Vikings took the lead, Sequoias’ Brandy Brewster was issued a red card in the 35th minute and ejected from the game for purposely kicking a downed player. COS was forced to play the rest of the contest with just 10 players on the field.
From that point, the game was all Long Beach.
Browne and Gandarilla hooked up on LBCC’s next goal. Browne took Gandarilla’s back-pass and nailed her shot from 25 yards out in goal to make it 3-1 in the 65th minute.
Gandarilla tallied her final score of the game minutes before the final whistle. Freshman midfielder Melody Castellon (Hamilton HS) led Gandarilla on a breakaway which she finished in the 88th minute for her fifth goal of the season.
In goal for Long Beach, Phillips posted no saves, while sophomore Rita Brown (Valencia HS) held COS scoreless in the second half with 2 saves.
Porter tallied 4 saves in goal for Sequoias.
Long Beach returns to action on Tuesday (Sep 19) when it travels to Rio Hondo College for a 4 pm non-conference game.
