Women’s Soccer:
No. 13 Long Beach plays Glendale to 1-1 draw at home

The No. 13 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College women’s soccer team got a tough match from visiting Glendale College on Tuesday but came away with a 1-1 non-conference draw.

The tie moved Long Beach’s record to 6-0-1 overall while Glendale evened its record to 2-2-2.

The Vikings played well the first half and dominated possession and field position throughout the first 45 minutes but were unable to score.

“Glendale did a good job of disrupting our offense and breaking up a lot of passes on the ground,” said LBCC co-head coach Alex Camargo. “Also we didn’t seem to have the energy we needed to compete at our normal level. Some of the team got pretty banged up on our last road trip.”

Long Beach had two great chances to score midway through the second.

A header by LBCC freshman forward Brooke Ehinger in the 54th minute was just deflected off goal by Glendale keeper Cristina Reyes.

Another header in the 64th minute by freshman midfielder Christina Durant seemed destined for the corner of the goal but was knocked away by a diving Reyes to keep the game scoreless.

The game remained scoreless until the 60th minute. After a Glendale corner kick, forward Ysenia Lucas’ header in front of the crowded net beat LBCC sophomore goalie Rachel Waters to give Glendale the 1-0 advantage.

The goal seemed to serve as a wake-up call to the Vikings as they turned up the defensive and offensive pressure towards the end of the contest.

The Vikings finally got on the board in the 77th minute. Sophomore defender Sandra Hernandez nailed a shot from 30 yards out. Her shot sailed over the head of Reyes, hit the bottom of the crossbar, and bounced in for the equalizer goal.

Glendale did a good job to turn away numerous LBCC advances until the final whistle blew with the score at 1-1.

Long Beach returns to action tomorrow (Sep 19) when it hosts Palomar College in a 3 pm non-conference game.
