Long Beach cruises to easy 9-1 win over visiting ECC Compton Center
The Long Beach City College women's soccer team got two goals each from sophomore Karina Ponce, and freshmen Claudia Toledo and Ashlynn Bolt on its way to a 9-1 rout over visiting El Camino College Compton Center on Tuesday in both teams' South Coast Conference opener.
The Vikings (4-3, 1-0 SCC) dominated the contest throughout and outshot Compton (0-2, 0-1 SCC) by a 40-3 margin. But Compton actually led early in the game, getting a goal in the second minute from forward Waynita Glenn.
Glenn nailed a shot that was stopped by LBCC freshman goalie Sara Thatcher. Glenn was able to deposit the deflection in the goal to give the Tartars the quick 1-0 advantage.
LBCC responded with a goal by Toledo in the third minute and then took the lead for good with a pair of quick goals in the 38th and 40th minute by Toledo and Bolt.
Long Beach went on to outscore Compton 6-0 in the second half to cruise to the easy win. Freshmen Mary Shank, Lauren Ingram (3 assists), and Michelle Mellinger also added single goals for the Vikings.
Thatcher made just one save for Long Beach over the first 66 minutes while freshman Ileana Aparacio closed out the game in goal without facing a shot.
The LBCC women return to action on Friday (Oct. 2) with a 2 p.m. SCC game at El Camino College. |
