Women’s Soccer:
Vikings pick up 1-0 conference
win over El Camino
Freshman forward Hannah Escamilla’s (Paramount HS) goal in the 26th minute was all the scoring the Vikings would need, as Long Beach City College defeated visiting El Camino College 1-0 in a South Coast Conference game Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore defender Kelly Matosian (Mayfair HS) fed Escamilla with the breakaway pass to earn the assist.
The Vikings kept El Camino goalie Emily Rodin busy, as LBCC outshot the Warriors by a 12-5 margin. Rodin posted 2 saves in goal.
El Camino (4-5-3, 0-2-1 SCC) had one huge scoring chance, but couldn’t finish.
Forward Amanda Pech stole the ball from LBCC’s last defender Allie Escobedo (Canyon HS) and broke free towards the net. But her shot was stopped by LBCC goalie Rita Brown (Valencia HS) to halt the scoring try.
Brown went on to post 3 saves to preserve the Vikings’ fourth shutout of the season.
With the win, Long Beach improved to 8-2-3 overall and 2-0-1 in the SCC. The Vikings return to action on October 10 when they host Mt. San Antonio College in a 4pm conference game.
