Women’s Soccer:
Long Beach suffers 2-1 conference loss to Mt. San Antonio

The Long Beach City College women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 South Coast Conference game to visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday afternoon at LBCC.

The loss snapped LBCC’s eight-game unbeaten streak and dropped the Vikings to 8-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.

The Vikings fell behind almost instantly, rallied to tie it early in the second half, but allowed the go-ahead goal late in the game.

Just 48 seconds into the match, Mt. SAC tallied its first goal. From the opening kickoff, forward Shanni Ibarra connected with forward Brittany Lane as she slipped her shot by LBCC sophomore goalie Rita Brown (Valencia HS) to give the Mounties the quick 1-0 advantage.

The remainder of the first half was uneventful as either team really controlled momentum.

But at the start of the second half, the Vikings changed their game plan and came out much more aggressive, controlling the tempo of the match.

The adjustment in strategy paid off in the 50th minute when freshman forward Brenda Gonzales (Hawthorne HS) chipped her shot over Mt. SAC’s drawn out goalie Kelli Beatty. Freshman midfielder Marisa Browne (Lakewood HS) was credited with the assist after her deflected shot found its way towards Gonzales.

The Vikings looked poised to mount a comeback, but had their hopes dashed in the 79th minute when Ibarra and Lane connected again for the second time.

Ibarra’s long and high pass drew out Brown and the LBCC defense. The ball was deflected towards the net, which allowed Lane to tap it in for the easy score.

Brown totaled 5 saves in the loss for Long Beach, while Beatty posted 3 saves for Mt. SAC (9-3-2 overall, 3-0-1 SCC).

Long Beach is back in action on Friday when it travels to Cerritos College for a 4 pm SCC game.
