Women’s Soccer:
No. 1 LBCC scores twice in second half to beat No. 16 Cerritos 2-1
The No. 1 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College women’s soccer team scored two second-half goals to pull out a 2-1 win over visiting No. 16 Cerritos College on Friday in a South Coast Conference showdown for first place.
Despite dominating throughout the contest, Long Beach trailed for the first time at home this season 1-0 at half time.
Cerritos took the early lead in the 7th minute. Midfielder Dioselina Valderrama was taken down by a Long Beach defender inside the LBCC penalty box and the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick. Valderrama converted the PK to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage.
It didn’t take long for the Vikings to get back into the game. In the 46th minute, sophomore forward Brittany Jensen (Kennedy HS) headed in sophomore forward Christina Pauley’s (Santa Ynez Valley HS) cross-pass from the right side to tie the game up.
Pauley and Jensen hooked up again for the eventual game-winning goal in the 61st minute. After a LBCC throw-in, Jensen found Pauley in front of the goal and Pauley quickly deposited it past Cerritos goalie Elizabeth Sanchez to put the Vikings up 2-1 and deliver the win.
Sanchez posted nine saves in goal for the Falcons, who were outshot by a 20-4 margin.
“Cerritos gave us one of our toughest games this season,” said LBCC co-head coach Alex Camargo. “They’re a solid team. But the game was closer than what I was hoping for. We had plenty of chances in the first half but we just couldn’t finish. The girls turned it up a notch in the second when they knew they had to.”
The win extended LBCC’s national junior college-record unbeaten streak to 91 games and gave the Vikings sole possession of first place in the South Coast Conference. Long Beach is 15-0-1 overall and 4-0 in the SCC.
The loss snapped Cerritos’ nine game winning streak and dropped its record to 13-2-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
The Vikings return to action on Tuesday when they host East Los Angeles College in a 2 pm SCC game.
