Women’s Soccer:
Castellon's hat-trick leads Vikings to 9-0 thrashing over Pasadena
Freshman midfielder Melody Castellon (Hamilton HS) posted a hat trick with three goals to lead the Long Beach City College women’s soccer team to a huge 9-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting Pasadena City College on Friday afternoon.
Long Beach led 3-0 at halftime before it exploded for six goals in the second half. Six different Vikings scored in the contest, as Long Beach outshot Pasadena by a 34-1 margin.
Freshman Allie Escobedo (Canyon HS) added two goals and two assists, and the Vikings got single goals from freshmen Sandra Hernandez (Magnolia HS), Hannah Escamilla (Paramount HS), Marisa Browne (Lakewood HS), and Megan Rossee (Lakewood HS).
“We needed a big win like this to get us back on track,” said LBCC co-head coach Alex Camargo. “We had two tough loses last week, so this should get our confidence back up to where it should be.”
The outcome of today’s contest was much different from when the last time these two teams met. On September 26 at PCC, the Lancers erased a late 2-0 LBCC lead with 20 minutes left in the game to earn a 2-2 draw.
“We wanted to control the game and put them away early so we wouldn’t have to worry about a comeback like last time,” Camargo said.
Sophomore goalie Rita Brown had an easy time in goal to help post the Vikings’ fifth shutout of the season.
Pasadena (1-11-4, 0-6-1 SCC) goalie Grecia Santiesteban posted six saves in the losing effort.
With the win, Long Beach improved to 10-4-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the SCC. The Vikings return to action on Tuesday (Oct 24) when they host L.A. Harbor College in a 2 pm conference game. |
