Women’s Soccer:
Vikings drop 5-0 SCC game to
No. 1-ranked Cerritos
The Long Beach City College women’s soccer team suffered a tough 5-0 South Coast Conference loss to No. 1 nationally-ranked Cerritos College on Tuesday at LBCC.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 9-5-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the SCC while Cerritos remained unbeaten at 11-0-3 and 5-0-1 in conference play.
Cerritos controlled the first half of play and outshot the Vikings by a 17-1 margin over the first 45 minutes. The Falcons took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Alyesse Orr in the 24th minute and jumped ahead 2-0 after Corina Villegas’ goal in the 43rd minute.
Long Beach came out playing with intensity in the second half, getting numerous scoring opportunities, but couldn’t finish.
In the 51st minute, freshman Jimi Cassiani broke down the right sideline and nailed a shot just above the crossbar. Sophomore Mayra Carranza’s left-footed shot in the 61st minute also just missed the crossbar and in the 89th minute, Cerritos goalie Chantal Cervero made an impressive save to stop freshman Karina Valiente’s mid-air shot.
Cerritos’ Mayra Garcia put the game out of reach with her 65th-minute goal. Monique Cisneros posted a goal in the 72nd minute and Garcia added her second goal in the 75th to close out the scoring for the Falcons.
Freshman Marilyn Montez posted 14 saves in goal for Long Beach in 73 minutes. Cervero had four saves in the shutout for the Falcons.
The Vikings return to action on Friday (Oct. 24) when they travel to El Camino College for a 2 p.m. SCC game. |
