Women’s Soccer:
No. 1 Long Beach cruises to 2-0 SCC win over El Camino
The No. 1 nationally-ranked Long Beach City College women’s soccer team improved its national junior college-record unbeaten streak to 95 games with its 2-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Friday.
The Vikings dominated the contest despite its low score. LBCC outshot El Camino by a 27-0 margin and posted its 14th shutout of the season.
Long Beach took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Freshman defender Shameka Gordon (Bronx, NY) was taken down in the penalty area and the Vikings were awarded a penalty kick.
Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Leotti (Rowland HS) froze ECC goalie Emily Rodin with her PK attempt to the top left corner to give the Vikings the early advantage.
El Camino held the Vikings scoreless for the rest of the first half before Long Beach got its final goal in the 49th minute.
Sophomore midfielder Mallory Olloque (Millikan HS) found sophomore forward Brittany Jensen in front of the goal with her right cross-pass. Jensen headed the ball in and closed the scoring for the Vikings.
The win improved Long Beach to 18-0-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the SCC. El Camino fell to 5-9-3 and 2-4-2 in conference play.
Long Beach will have a week have a week off until its next action. The Vikings host Mt. San Antonio College in a 2 p.m. SCC game next Friday (Nov. 4).
