Women’s Soccer:
Second-half surge lifts Long Beach to 2-0 win over Pasadena
A pair of second-half goals propelled the Long Beach City College women’s soccer team to a 2-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting Pasadena City College on Tuesday.
The win improved Long Beach to 10-5-4 overall and 4-1-3 in the SCC while Pasadena dropped to 7-8-1 and 2-5-1 in conference play.
The game was scoreless after 45 minutes, but LBCC had one of its best chances to score in the 42nd minute. After a Pasadena foul, sophomore forward Brooke Ehinger’s free kick from 25 yards out nailed the inner top right corner of the goal and bounced out.
LBCC had two other scoring chances in the 46th and 76th minute, but PCC defender Molly Pink made two empty-goal saves to turn the Vikings away.
The Viking defense made an empty-net save on its own when sophomore midfielder Meghan-Rose Bertell stopped the shot of PCC’s Alexa Weigand in the 62nd minute.
Long Beach finally got on the board in the 72nd minute. Freshman defender Angela Fornaserri send a deep pass from midfield down the right sideline to sophomore forward Mayra Carranza. Carranza cut inside her defender and nailed a shot pass PCC goalie Dione Bonilla for the 1-0 lead.
Ehinger put the game away with her goal in the 84th minute. Freshman midfielder Ruza Cale crossed a pass from the left side that Ehinger redirected the ball past Bonilla charging in from goal for the final score of the game.
Freshman Marilyn Montez posted her ninth save in goal and had six saves. For Pasadena, Bonilla had four saves.
The LBCC women return to action on Friday (Oc. 31) when they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 5 p.m. SCC game. |
