LBCC unbeaten streak ends at 99 games after 3-1 loss to Pasadena
Long Beach City College’s national junior college-record unbeaten streak finally came to an end on Monday, as Pasadena City College handed the Vikings a 3-1 loss in both teams’ South Coast Conference finale.
The streak will go down in history at 99 games, just one short of the century mark. Fittingly, it was Pasadena that last beat Long Beach in 2001. At PCC, the Vikings fell 3-2 on October 23.
Pasadena’s Danielle Moorehead scored twice and assisted on the third goal to lead the Lancers to the win.
Moorehead’s first goal came on a header in the 63rd minute to put PCC up 1-0. Brittney Metz’ free kick found Moorehead in the front of the goal, which she placed past LBCC goalkeeper Sarah Phillips (Los Alamitos HS).
Moorehead struck again in the 82nd minute after a she put back a shot that deflected off a LBCC defender.
Trailing 2-0, the Vikings finally got on the board in the 84th minute. Freshman forward Shaneka Gordon (Bronx, NY) almost effortless dribbled the ball down an entire half of the field and nailed her shot by PCC goalie Brittnii Zorrilla for the goal.
Long Beach would get no closer as the Lancers sealed the win with a score in the 90th minute. After a corner kick, Moorehead connected with Ana Valverde from close range for the final goal of the game.
The Vikings had numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game, but could not convert. Their biggest chance came in the 32nd minute when Gordon beat two Lancer defenders and Zorrilla on a breakaway but overshot the open net.
With the loss, Long Beach closes the regular season with a 21-1-1 overall record. The Vikings compiled a 10-1-1 conference record and had already wrapped up their sixth straight South Coast Conference championship following their win last Friday.
Pasadena improved to 14-6-1 overall and 7-4-1 in conference play. The win should secure the Lancers a spot in the Southern California regional playoffs.
The SoCal Regional brackets will be announced on Thursday, with first-round games scheduled for Saturday.
Despite the loss, the Vikings will still open up the playoffs at home. Long Beach is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation.
