Women’s Soccer:
Vikings look to avenge PCC loss, earn No. 4 seed for SoCal Regionals
Long Beach City College’s postseason run to reclaim the California Community College women’s soccer championship begins on Saturday when the Vikings will host the same team that snapped their national junior college-record 99-game unbeaten streak last week, the Pasadena City College Lancers.
Long Beach is seeded No. 4 for the 2005 Southern California Regional Playoffs, while Pasadena makes it return to LBCC as the tournament’s No. 13-seed. The Round 1 playoff game is scheduled for this Saturday (Nov. 19) at 2 pm.
Pasadena brings a 14-6-1 overall record in the playoffs and finished tied for third in the South Coast Conference with a 7-4-1 mark. Pasadena is one of only two teams to put a blemish on the Vikings’ record this season, playing them to a 1-1 tie at PCC on October 21, while handing them a 3-1 loss in Long Beach on November 14.
The winner of the game will advance to face either No. 5 Cuesta College or No. 10 San Diego Mesa College on Tuesday, November 22.
Los Angeles Pierce College (21-1-1) is the top seed in this year’s regionals, with Santiago Canyons College (20-0-2), Cypress College (19-1-2), LBCC (21-1-2), and Cuesta (14-2-5) rounding out the top-five.
The Vikings recently closed up the regular season with a 10-1-1 record in conference play to earn their sixth consecutive SCC championship. Long Beach looks to capture its sixth overall state title (1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003).
The 2005 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Soccer Championships is set for December 10-11 in Fresno. The top two teams from the North and South regional tournaments advance to the state semifinals.
